About SCHÖNECK

Schöneck is situated within the Nature Park Erzgebirge/Vogtland. It has an elevation of 700 to 800m above sea level - that's why its nickname is "balcony of Vogtland region".
The surroundning country goes smoothly down in the direction of southwest to north. So you can have stunning views over 2000 squarekilometres. Once the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig - onehundred kilometres away - was seen from here.
Geologically, the plateau of Schöneck belongs to the western edges of the Erzgebirge. Because of its elevation, the huge forests full of spruce and its clean air Schoeneck has been a popular recreational area and holiday resort visited by more and more people for decades.
During the summer months hikers and people in need of relaxation are mainly attracted by Schöneck. Broad forests of spruce and fresh clean air are basics for relaxation. In 1962 Schöneck got the title of a holiday resort.
The small town in the Vogtland region especially attracts wintersports lovers of all kinds. In 1900 competitions in ski jumping took place. Ski clubs from all over Saxony held their competitions on alpine ski runs or cross-country loipes. Due to the fact that snow is almost guaranteed Schöneck gained increasing importance as a centre of wintersports. Slopes for practising as well as downhill slopes of all levels of difficulty are easy to find in the immediate vicinity of the town. There is also a ski school at Hohe Reuth. Just in case there is a ski emergency: We have a rescue team that helps within an instant.
Even before the turn of the last century Schöneck was on its way to be a holiday resort. In the middle of the town a park was created with plenty of recreational areas and an open-air theatre. A hotel and many small bed and breakfasts gave the guests a very warm welcome.
Natural monument / viewpoint Alter Söll, 734m altitude: breathtaking view over the region Upper Vogtland with Elstergebirge, Elstertal up to Fichtelgebirge and Thüringer Wald.
Because of excavations around Alter Söll in 1986 archeologists were able to uncover the foundation walls of the old castle and pieces of earthen ware dated back to the 13th and 14th century.
