| PROGRAMME
The development and safe operation of nuclear
installations in Europe is of vital importance for the
future of nuclear energy. Helping to ensure the safe
generation of nuclear power has always been one of the
top priorities of the Euratom Framework Programme (FP)
research effort.
FISA 2009 is the seventh in a series of international
conferences on EU research and training in reactor
systems organised by the
European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research.
It will be held under the auspices of the Czech
Presidency of the European Union in Prague, Czech
Republic, on 22-24 June 2009.
The main objectives of the conference are the
dissemination of Euratom FP results and the
cross-fertilisation of various disciplines, together
with the creation of new S/T partnerships for follow-up
actions (including training).
In this respect, FISA 2009 will endeavour to present the
achievements of the research conducted under the
Specific Programme for nuclear research and training
activities of FP6 and FP7 in the following areas: safety
and competitiveness of existing and future nuclear
installations, advanced nuclear systems for increased
sustainability, advanced systems for nonelectrical uses
of nuclear energy, partitioning and transmutation, as
well as education and training, and cross-cutting
aspects (e.g. infrastructures).
Post-conference workshops on issues of common interest
will be organised on 25 June, such as commonalities
between fission and fusion (e.g. innovative materials),
clustering of partitioning and transmutation activities,
convergence of nuclear safety practices, mutual
recognition of training programmes and of professional
qualifications, economic and political challenges of the
“ nuclear renaissance”, synergy of research policies and
international collaboration (outside the EU), etc.
More than 400 participants from 32 countries attended
the previous conference, FISA 2006 in Luxembourg.
The above research activities are an integral part of
the Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform
(SNE-TP, www.snetp.eu) launched in September 2007. This
platform is playing an increasing role in supporting and
implementing the EU policy decisions in the area of
nuclear energy. Also worth mentioning in this context is
the vote in the European Parliament on
the Buzek Report in July 2008: 85 % of the MEPs voted in
favour of a report (related to the Strategic Energy
Technology Plan) that “strongly supports the proposed
European Industrial Initiatives on wind, solar,
bio-energy, CO2 capture / transport and storage,
electricity grids and nuclear fission”.
On-line registration for FISA 2009 (conference and
accommodation) is now open on our site on CORDIS. The
site will be updated regularly with news on the
conference.
